What We Got Up To at Ellerslie’s Boxing Day Races
The day after Christmas usually means shopping galore but we wanted to celebrate it with more excitement in 2016 – and so we did! For over 150 years, Ellerslie’s Boxing Day Races has allowed Aucklanders and racing enthusiasts alike with a day of high fashion, entertainment and the best of thoroughbred racing.
Amongst the thousands who attended, us XYNZ girls (Alberllie and Hannah) had a fantastic day ourselves – cheering with the crowd, mingling and providing live coverage of the races through Ellerslie’s Snapchat. The atmosphere varied across different areas but race-goers kept the party going until the last race, and we loved it.
Although the focus was more on racing, the fashion also proved to be a favourite. Fabulous dresses, headwear and suits dominated the racecourse, but stakes were high at the annual Fashions in the Field. This event was steeped in tradition, and the entrants were dressed to the nines to impress the judges – Lulu Wilcox, Carena West and Murray Crane.
Tickets were nearly sold out, so it was a massive day for Ellerslie! This turnout shows how much attendees prefer to experience Boxing Day madness in style (a cool kind of madness, of course). Champagne in hand, enjoying a perfect Summer’s day and mingling in the crowd with a vibe like no other. The event may be centred on the love for racing and fashion, but what we took home from the experience was that it’s also about the people you meet and the memorable day you spend with your friends and family. Should you feel a bit FOMO right now? Absolutely.
If you feel like you missed out, below is a short video to show you what went down at the Boxing Day Races. Thanks for having us Ellerslie!
